Program Overview
Partner to Partner is designed to provide support to older adults coping with issues such as isolation, loneliness, and loss. Older adults who would be helped by this program are those who perhaps tend to be shy, not accustomed to joining groups, or those who may turn inward when experiencing normal life stress.
A Partner to Partner volunteer is someone who would be aware of a change in someone’s appearance, mood, and/or behavior. The volunteer would show their support and caring interest by listening to what they may need to express. Volunteers will be trained to have a clear understanding of and the ability to use attentive and supportive listening skills to assist peers with difficult aging and life issues.
Volunteers are paired with someone from their older adult center. Volunteers provide a safe space for their peers. Volunteers lend a listening ear. Volunteers meet informally with their peers and provide telephone reassurance. Volunteers will maintain the privacy and confidentiality of their peers, only sharing with senior center staff when necessary. Volunteers provide support, not advice or answers.
Partner to Partner volunteers are older adult volunteers. Older adult volunteers are aged 60 and up (some exceptions may apply). Older adult volunteers understand the joy and challenges of aging. This helps to provide support and understanding to their peers.
