About HIICAP Health Insurance Information, Counseling, and Assistance Program (HIICAP) provides free and nonbiased counseling to Medicare beneficiaries regarding all health coverage plans. About The Volunteer Position: HIICAP counselors work directly with Medicare beneficiaries to educate them about Medicare and other related programs that are available to them. Counselors provide these services both in-person and over the phone. Volunteering takes place during regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM). Becoming a HIICAP Volunteer: After responding to this opportunity, prospective volunteers will be contacted by NYC Aging staff to arrange an interview. Prior to attending any orientation or training, volunteers will be required to complete a background check. Volunteers will attend an orientation session. Following orientation, volunteers will take part in counselor training 3 days per week for 2 weeks. Skills Required: Computer skills: including internet searches, email, and Microsoft Office Professional and compassionate demeanor Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently Ability to work well with others from diverse backgrounds Ability to speak a language other than English is a plus, but not required. Time Commitment: Volunteers serve 2-3 times per week on consistent days and times (Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM). A three-month plus commitment after completing training is desired. Questions?
